A door that sits crooked, is wedged in the opening, or has one side visibly dropped has come off its track. This is one of the few garage door faults that gets rapidly worse if you keep pressing the button, so the first thing to do is stop.

Why it happens

  • A lift cable snapped. One side loses support, drops, and the rollers on that side pull out of the track. This is the most common cause by a distance.
  • A car or a bike caught it. Even a light knock while the door is moving can jump the rollers.
  • Something was in the way when it closed. The door lands on an obstruction, the cable goes slack on the drum, and it re-winds wrong on the next lift.
  • Worn rollers. Old steel rollers with failed bearings sit badly in the track and eventually walk out of it.
  • Loose track brackets. Vibration over years opens up the fixings and the track spreads.

What not to do

Do not run the opener to “help it back on”. The door is already out of alignment and the opener will bend track, tear brackets out of the wall, and turn a straightforward repair into a new track and possibly new sections. Do not park under it, and do not stand under it to look up at the rollers — a door held by one cable is not held safely.

What the repair involves

The door is secured and taken off tension, the rollers are re-seated in the track, and any track that has been bent is straightened or replaced. Cables are replaced in pairs and re-wound onto the drums so both sides carry the same load, and the drums are re-set so the door is level. Then the door is balanced by hand and the opener’s limits are re-checked.

Cables are replaced in pairs, for the same reason springs are

Both cables have done exactly the same number of cycles and have been exposed to the same moisture. When one frays through at the drum, the other is at the same point. Replacing only the broken one is how you end up doing this twice.

The thing worth checking afterwards

If cables are fraying early, something is usually causing it — a drum that is worn, a door that is out of level so one side takes more load, or water running down the inside of the door. Fixing the cause is what stops it recurring.
